My name is Melissa Albers (Bsc in nutrition) and I am specialized in pathology, metabolic conditions, psychiatry & medication. The last few years I specialized myself in treating patients online (Video call with Skype, Facebook or Facetime) with Interstitial Cystitis, because in 2008 my partner has been diagnosed with interstitial cystitis.

For several years he suffered tremendously from interstitial cystitis related symptoms. For us it was clear what his burden of disease was, but we both experienced that neither the health industry, nor patient or governmental organisations completely realized that coping with a chronic condition means more than taking a pill against physical pain and/or mental discomfort and that medication or operations (like removing the bladder) are not always the best solution. However, sharing this kind of information with the involved parties is essential.

…coping with a chronic condition requires a balanced and holistic approach to treatment and self-care. As an IC specialized nutritionist & therapist in the Netherlands, I believe that almost every chronic condition, including IC, has underlying factors, which contribute to patient suffering, such as chronic low-grade non-bacterial inflammation, hormonal imbalances and/or nutritional depletion. These are also important to address…Read more

Interstitial Cystitis (IC) Treatment & Nutritional Advice

Succes Stories:

My approach:

Due to the lack of correct support from the (health) industry (including several specialists who advised to remove the bladder and take loads of heavy medication, because their wouldn’t be another solution), we decided to take the lead in our own hands. This was in the year 2010. I knew what the burden of disease of my partner was, so I knew what he needed. According to his needs, I created a personal health plan for him, which consisted of a special diet, supplements, exercise and mental support. It took us five hard years with a lot of perseverance, but until today my partner is completely cured and stronger and healthier as he has ever been.

Today our aim is to help chronically ill patients (including patients with interstitial cystitis) by trying to raise awareness about the burden of disease, because raising more awareness about the impact of suffering from a chronic condition is crucial in order to receive the proper care and cure.

Nutrition plays an important role in the treatment of chronic conditions. However, nowadays often patients receive medication and (physical or mental) therapies in order to relieve their symptoms. The reason behind this lies in the fact that current medical protocols focus on drug, physical and/or mental therapies. It’s time to change these protocols as nutrition has proven to be effective in relieving and sometimes even solving symptoms chronically ill patients suffer from.

Almost every chronic condition, including interstitial cystitis, has some underlying similar factors such as chronic low-grade non-bacterial inflammations, hormonal imbalances and nutritional depletion. If measurements against these three factors can be undertaken, patients will significantly experience fewer symptoms and discomforts (e.g. pain, stress, abdominal issues, incontinence, etc). If patients only receive drug, physical and/or mental therapies, they are missing an important step in their cure and care, because these therapies will never be able to solve the three above-mentioned factors (completely). The role of (un)healthy nutrition is crucial. Unhealthy food (e.g. sugar, refined oils, fried & processed foods) stimulates low-grade inflammation, creates (higher) hormonal imbalances and decreases the immune response. Next to that, unhealthy food, which is very low in nutrients, causes and increases depletion. And depletion on its way causes or increases immune system malfunction, inflammations and hormonal imbalances.

On the other hand, healthy food (that contains of unprocessed and natural ingredients as well as natural dietary supplements) can help to restore deficiencies and can increase the physical as well as the mental condition. Therefore nutrition plays an indispensible role in reaching and maintaining a healthy mental and physical status.
