Today marks the official end of the Interstitial Cystitis Awareness Campaign Month. It was the month when we wore TEAL and dressed up like IC Warriors to support the cause! It has been marked with amazing successes, driven by incredible organizations like IC Today, Defeat IC and ICAwareness.org.
For me, it is mind boggling to think the articles I wrote over the past few weeks have been shared over 5,500 times. Merely one month ago only a handful of people even knew I had Interstitial Cystitis! And then I think of the powerful video by Sarah Kernan which has been shared over 4,700 times and viewed over 191,000 times! She too was afraid to break her silence but her bravery has brought awareness to tens of thousands of people.
We are just two IC Warriors. There are many other IC Warriors who have been shouting loud and creating gigantic waves in the world. People are LISTENING. People are ASKING QUESTIONS. People are beginning to UNDERSTAND what INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS really means.
This awareness only makes us STRONGER. It reignites the CONVICTION to keep fighting. It brings LIGHT to the darkness. And most importantly it brings HOPE.
Even though the official annual campaign is ending, we need to keep our momentum going. Tempting as it may be, we must not regress to the solitary confinement of our bathrooms. We need to keep talking about IC, highlighting the debilitating nature of the condition, and lobbying for research dollars to end the suffering of millions. It is only in doing so that we will FIND A CURE and DEFEAT IC.
Please share so we can continue to stay focused on raising awareness.
(Thank you to all those who have shared our posts and to special people like Janet San Juan (my incredible friend, makeup artist and hair stylist pictured below) who has gone above and beyond to help IC Warriors win their fight…we are lucky to have people like this fighting in our corner 🙂
My name is Fiona McKiernan and on September 1st, 2015 I proclaimed to the world that I am an “IC Warrior”.
